The Ontario Drug Policy Research Network (ODPRN) has recently published a new report examining opioid use disorder and opioid toxicity harms among older adults in Ontario.
A special thank you to the Waterloo Wellington Older Adults and Substance Use Working Group for supporting the development of this important project.
Older adults with opioid use disorder are often overlooked in research, as well as in service planning and delivery. As this population grows, our healthcare and social service systems need to be prepared to respond to substance use alongside the changing health, social and support needs that can come with aging.
The report examines the circumstances surrounding opioid toxicity deaths among older adults and highlights gaps in the current response, along with considerations for developing services that better meet the needs of older adults who use opioids.
